Day at Disney

Today is Game Day in Ryan's kindergarten class. At home, one of Ryan and AJ's favourite games is the Pokemon Spinning Figures Game or "Pokemon Spinners" as they call it.

Ryan's
lunch:
green
beans;
blue-
berries;
straw-
berries;
baby
carrots;
a pickle;
Pikachu
peanut
butter
& grape
jelly
sandwich.

I had the opportunity to take just Ryan to Disney's Magic Kingdom while we were in Florida. We don't do lots of theme parks, usually just one day, and all the boys had been there before. Just Ryan wanted to go, so off we went, bright and early...

We didn't even have to use the parking shuttle we were parked so close to the entrance. We ran most of the way, LOL.

Ryan was fascinated by the topiary. We took the monorail around the lake (the boat wasn't even running yet), watched duck families waddling around, and headed to the castle to wait for the ropes to be removed at 9am. Entertainment included bubble blowers, meeting the Fairy Godmother, and eating a quick snack.

The tile mosaics inside the castle tunnel are really quite impressive!

Disney is funny this way...
you can become preoccupied
by the gaudy commercial
monstrosity, or you can
choose to admire the truly
talented artwork and gardens
that help transform the place
into the fairytale fantasyland.

A pic for my husband,
the mouse-lover.

Our promptness and
patience was rewarded
by being on the first
Dumbo ride of the day!
(This ride often has one
of the longest lines for
what is probably the briefest ride in the whole park.)

It's A Small World hasn't changed at all since I first rode it when I was 10 years old. And surprisingly this was Ryan's first ride on a carousel!

The Winnie The Pooh ride
was cute--I actually hadn't
been on it before. Though I
do miss its predecessor: Mr.
Toad's Wild Ride.

I loved the haunted house
as a kid. When I was Ryan's
age I used to write haunted
house books...all of them
pretty much the same: "X
number of people go for a
walk in the woods and get
lost..." etc.

After I failed miserably
conveying the significance
of the term "Fast Pass" to
Ryan, we stood in line for
45 minutes at Big Thunder
Mountain Railroad.

A contraceptive tip to the
childless readers out there...
It was more enjoyable to stand in a winding claustrophobic 90F degree line with a whining 6 year old carrying a backpack and often said child, than it often is to spend an hour at home with all 4 kids on a good day...so consider your actions carefully. That torturously long line was rather enjoyable! Happily, he loved the ride.

Pirates of the Carribean doesn't have Fast Pass, and Ryan had learned his lesson and understood why we wouldn't be riding it that day! Instead we cooled off with popsicles and spitting tiki masks and a walk through the Swiss Family Treehouse.

We frugally brought most of our own food, but vegetarian treats abound in the Magic Kingdom, even more than Vegetarian Walt Disney World indicates. There were even a few places where I spied vegetarian wraps on their brief menus, apparently recent additions since the latest Magic Kingdom map was printed. "Well-balanced" and "vegetarian" options are indicated on the map with a red apple...and most restaurants had that pretty red apple listed next to them! Certainly there is less available for vegans, but still it's not hard to buy your food there if that's what you want to do.
And they don't hose you on concession prices like movie theatres do...just on the admission price. Amazing, considering they grow some amazing exotic produce nearby just for Disney in their greenhouses (I first learned about them on a PBS show of all places).

Next we went to Tomorrowland and Fast-Passed the Buzz Lightyear ride (Ryan & AJ's favourite). While we waited we went to meet Buzz, admired the local wildlife (!), and bought some cotton candy for Ryan to try (with plenty to bring home to share).

I was suckered (haha) into
buying a twirly lollipop
which Ryan enjoyed on the
boatride back to the parking
entrance. We also picked up
a bouquet of little Mickey
Mouse lollipops to share with
the brothers.

I hope next time we're here,
Dada can take Maia to the
Magic Kingdom and do the
father/daughter thing. Now that would be cute!

Florida Firsts

It was stuffed animal day in Ryan's class, so of course he brought his favourite "Giraffey".
Ryan's lunch: banana blueberry muffin; steamed broccoli; a pickle; strawberry & orange segments; roasted almonds; apple cinnamon mini rice cakes.Nate's lunch: banana blueberry muffin; a pickle; an olive; strawberry & orange segments; steamed broccoli.

Lots can happen during a week on vacation...

Maia took her first airplane trip.
Maia ate wheat and soy (in the form of soybean oil) for the first time...normally I wait til 1 year, but it was more convenient while traveling to allow it 6 weeks early.
Maia was away from me for 6+ hours straight.
Maia...drumroll please...went in the pool and LOVED it! (Maia HATES baths vehemently.)

Nate slept in a twin bed for the first time...and wouldn't you know it, in a house where each boy could have had their own ROOM, they all wanted to sleep together like they do at home, so we dragged a mattress into the "baseball room" for Nate.
Nate played mini golf for the first time.
Nate played pool for the first time.

AJ was the first kid I know of ever to refuse a trip to Disney World...in his defense, his reasons made sense: "Disney World is too loud, and hot, and you have to walk a lot." Nate wasn't feeling well that day, so Dada stayed home and I took just Ryan!
AJ learned to play the game Topple, and taught our guests to play my "Ant Game".

Ryan learned to swim without assistance/floatation across the pool and put his head all the way under water repeatedly.
Ryan went on a water slide for the first time, by himself! (He JUST made the 4 foot height requirement, woo hoo!)
Ryan went on the first Dumbo ride of the day at Disney's Magic Kingdom.
Ryan stood in the longest line of his life and rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for the first time.
Ryan tried cotton candy for the first time.

Maia tries wheat--pancakes
by the pool for breakfast.

Nate in his bed...okay, on
top of and across his bed.

Maia crawling around the
house...or is she doing
push-ups??

AJ enjoys playing the
Ant Game...yes, we're
gonna actually publish
this game in the future.

Maia tries pizza for the
first time...thanks to Amy's
cheeseless pizza and Publix
supermarket!

Ryan, underwater.
Kinda freaky seeing
your kid like that at
first!

The Windsor Hills water
slide...4 foot minimum and
you must be able to swim
unassisted.

Maia asleep on the plane.

Pokemon #258: Mudkip

Mudkip is a water-type starter Pokemon that can be chosen in Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald, along with Treecko and Torchic. Mudkip can use the fin on their heads to detect subtle changes in air and water currents. Mudkip are born on the beach, but soon make their way to homes in swamps or other wetlands.

This
Mudkip
is made
from
rice
dyed
blue
during
cooking,
carrot
"gills",
bok choy
stem,
and nori
features.

Ryan's lunch: blueberries; blanched spinach; bean salad; rice Mudkip; a packet of Pokemon fruit snacks on the side.

AJ didn't need to bring his own snack because Dada was parent helper. Our snack for the class was puzzle pretzels, apple slices, baby carrots & fruit punch (100% juice).

Now more highlights from our trip to Florida last week...

We visited Downtown Disney in Buena Vista. There's a huge Disney store there, with a giant spitting Stitch (from Lilo & Stitch) over the main entrance. The boys thought it was hysterical to stand there waiting to be "spit" on by the overhead fountain.
There's also a Lego sea serpent IN the lake!

At the Lego store there is a Lego dinosaur and various other lifelike Lego statues. The boys were really excited about the Bionicle one.

Maia was more interested in a nap than the Lego store, but the boys built and raced Lego cars, checked out the massive collection of loose Lego bins, and generally drooled over everything. Ryan got a small Lego Star Wars speeder and AJ got a Lego mug with his name on it...and we finally bought a brick separator to save them from using their teeth all the time to take apart stubborn pieces!

And I think it goes without
saying that I had to at least
peek inside the Ghirardelli
chocolate store.

But the boys enjoyed some
frozen lemonade and soft
pretzels.

Mickey & mini

First day back to school after our Florida trip, so of course I had to make Disney bentos:
Ryan's lunch: Disney pasta; edamame; steamed broccoli w/pasta "M-I-C-K-E-Y"; strawberries & blueberries; rice & bean burrito; roasted almonds; Mickey Mouse chocolate sandwich cookies.

AJ's snack: edamame; steamed broccoli; Disney pasta; pita chips; chocolate sandwich cookie.
Nate's lunch: broccoli & edamame; strawberries & blueberries w/2 pasta pieces; pita chips; chocolate sandwich cookie.

Nate played mini golf for the first time at Bonanza Golf...actually he was here crawling around as a baby a year and a half ago...(and remember my mini golf bento?)...

Nate would have been satisfied to play 5 holes and be done. By the 15th hole he'd had enough and collapsed in a heap of whining sweat...

...watch out for the Maia hazard!

Old fashioned candy sticks
ended the outing happily!

Back from a Break

Hi all! I was on hiatus without ability to download my photos.
Despite being on vacation, I didn't let the week pass without at least one set of bentos...

Ryan's lunchNate & AJ's lunches

I did not bring any supplies with me. I made do with whatever I could find at the local Publix supermarket...though I did know the house we were staying in had the Pooh bentos since we'd rented it before.

I also made a great dinner for the plane on the way down to Florida, but I ran out of time to photograph before leaving the house, and wouldn't you know that my camera was buried in an overhead bin and I had a baby asleep in my lap when it was time to break out the food.
But there were some great kimchee dumplings, cucumber salad, spinach, sandwiches, chocolate covered rice cakes, smoked almonds, etc.

The trip back wasn't as fancy, utilizing whatever groceries I had left. We ate a simple bean salad with tortilla chips though...quite yummy!

I'll be tacking on vacation pics to the ends of all my posts this week...
