Don't Mess

...With Texas. It may have been a holiday, but Dada was off on back to back trips to Texas. So I made this snack for his flight.
Husband's snack: clementine on the side; spinach salad w/tomato slices, kalamata olives & chives w/Goddess dressing on the side; mini pumpkin muffin.

The tomatoes and chives are still from our CSA share last month! But there's only one more ripe tomato in the fruit bowl. Luckily the boys were happy to have more green tomato salsa with their lunch...
Top clockwise: sauteed Tofurky sausage & collard greens; pita chips; spinach & chive hummus; tortilla strips; green tomato salsa; waffle pretzels; baby carrots & cucumber slices.

meals on the move

Only grownup bentos today! Woohoo! One for me, and a disposable airplane dinner for my husband.

I enjoyed my lunch alone at Grim's Crossing, a brook in the Ashland Town Forest.

The forecast for Los Angeles was actually the same as here in New England! For once I don't have to be jealous of my husband leaving, because in his words "New England is much prettier."
Husband's travel dinner: olives; toasted everything bagel w/Dr. Praeger's California Burger, mustard, onion & tomato; baby carrots.

raw

I've done the raw thing from time to time in my life, but I'm doin' it again for 40 days with a friend.
So instead of the usual raw blogging featuring the best meal of the day, or unique smoothie recipes and such, I'm just gonna list what I eat for the entire day for anyone who's curious...and throw a pic in here or there...

7:30am- smoothie: 1 banana, 4 frozen cherries, 1/3 cup frozen mango, 2 T. sunflower seeds, liquid DHA, water.
9:30am- small bowl of cantaloupe chunks.
11:30am- 1 orange; 12 mini baby carrots; 6 celery sticks (2 stalks).
1:30pm- smoothie: 1 banana, 1/2 a pear, handful of spinach, 1 tsp. tahini, pinch of mint, water.
4pm- 1 blood orange.
5:30pm- salad: romaine lettuce, purple cabbage, 1/2 a red bell pepper, a little chopped onion, balsamic vinegar.

Aside from my food, I did make a travel meal for my husband before he left this morning...no toothpicks 'cause ya know he might hijack the entire flight crew with a wooden toothpick. ;-)
Husband's lunch: Dr. Praeger's Tex Mex veggie burger on wheat bread w/mustard and onion; moro blood orange segments; pickle slices; baby carrots.

Fly away friday

I'm taking fridays off from alphabet bentos. By the end of the week I need groceries and it would likely be impossible to complete a one-letter lunch.

In lieu of AJ and I visiting the Mary Had A Little Lamb schoolhouse last weekend, here is a little lamb for both boys, inspired by Anna the Red.

Ryan's lunch: green leaf lettuce; rice ball w/Tofurky face & nori eye; cucumber flowers; Tofurky flower; purple grapes; steamed broccoli; bell pepper strips; blueberry soy yogurt on the side.

AJ and Dada also needed lunches. AJ is going on his first business trip to Atlanta for the weekend.

AJ's lunch (in a disposable recycled container): cucumber flowers; green leaf lettuce; Tofurky flower; rice ball w/Tofurky face & nori eyes; purple grapes; yellow bell pepper star; gherkin pickle; rice ball w/goma shio; tofu hot dog segment w/edamame; mini banana muffin; steamed broccoli.

Husband's lunch (in disposable recycled container): green leaf lettuce; rice triangle w/nori; bell pepper strips; salted radish slices; cucumber slices; Tofurky flower; rice ball w/goma shio; steamed broccoli; mini banana muffin; purple grapes; clementine on the side.

Of course I also had to pack AJ's suitcase full of food for the weekend. Atlants isn't exactly a mecca for vegan cuisine...
Travel food: pear cups; Rice Dream drink boxes; juice boxes; mini Luna bars & 1 full-size Luna bar; chocolate chip animal cookies; fruit twist; raisin & peanut mix; dried vegetable chips; mini bagels; berry applesauce; 2 Dum Dum lollipops; Corn Nuts; container of peanut butter.














Maia tried to pack Dada's
suitcase full of toys. And
she wouldn't stay out of
the little suitcase, sitting
there shuffling (and ruining)
a few of Dada's extra Magic
cards. Wouldn't the baggage
handlers be surprised to
find this little stowaway?

Mid-winter

Monday:
AJ's snack: fancy apples; cucumber slices; meatless meatball; rice ball w/sun; green beans.
Ryan's groundhog day lunch: blueberries; fancy apple slices; meatless meatball; green beans; bell pepper "sun"; cucumber slices; baby carrot; Lake Champlain dark chocolate with almonds; rice triangle with abure age "groundhog" coming out of his nori "hole" to look for his shadow. Alas, I don't think winter is over yet.

A lunch for my husband:
steamed turnip; Lake
Champlain dark chocolate;
grape tomatoes; marinated
mushrooms; rice ball;
meatless meatballs; mini
pumpkin muffin; mixed
nuts; blueberries.

Nate has been really
in to eating avocado
halves lately. Actually,

Nate's lunch: "chik'n" salad; grape tomatoes; roasted parsnips; strawberries & blueberries; mini pumpkin muffin; broccoli; carrot.

AJ's snack: "chik'n"

Triscuit triangles.




Ryan's lunch: strawberries & blueberries; carrots; roasted parsnips; mini pumpkin muffin; snow peas; broccoli; Triscuit triangles; soy cheese shapes; Thermos of ma po tofu with green beans, bok choy & bamboo shoots.

Wednesday:
Ryan's Nintendo lunch: rice balls with yellow bell pepper & carrot stars; marinated mushrooms; edamame; broccoli; vegetable dumpling; fancy apple slices; "mushroom" made of soy cheese & tomato half w/nori face.
AJ's snack: a cupcake
for his friend's 5th
birthday at school.






Thursday:

AJ's snack & Nate's
lunch: mini pumpkin miso
muffins; mini banana
blueberry muffins; soy
nuggets...
AJ had seaweed rice
crackers & crunchy peas.
Nate had a chocolate
covered strawberry, blueberries, & grape tomatoes.
Ryan's lunch: Thermos of rice with stir-fried green beans, snow peas & asparagus w/"chik'n" strips and some stir-fried mung bean sprouts; mini pumpkin miso muffin; mini banana blueberry muffin; chik'n nuggets; grape tomato; chocolate-covered strawberries; blueberries; crunchy peas; iso maki crackers; almonds.

I thought I'd made way too much food for Ryan, but it was a very cold morning, he didn't finish breakfast, and he was singing in the school winter concert that morning. Wouldn't you know it, he ate everything except a few almonds & a single pea, and he couldn't finish those because he ran out of time at lunch. I guess he really was hungry!

My husband was leaving
on yet ANOTHER trip.
He's been traveling a lot
lately to promote his new
game
to distributors around
the country. So I made
him dinner for the plane:
strawberries; Tofurky bagel
sandwich; red & yellow bell
pepper strips; grape tomatoes; baby carrots. And I tossed a chocolate heart in on top (not shown).

Friday:
Ryan's mid-winter lunch: peas & corn; meatless meatballs; blue rice; mashed potatoes; soy cheese cloud; yellow bell pepper sun; cucumber pine tree w/ Tofutti cream cheese snow & Tofurky trunk.
Ryan was being picked
up by grandma from
school, and later going to
a Valentine's party, so in
addition to a Luna bar, I
made this dinner/snack
assortment that could
last the entire day in his
backpack: whole grain
crackers; dried apricots; strawberry cereal bites; crunchy peas; iso maki crackers; peanuts &
raisins; grape tomato; baby carrots.

And can you believe it...a
local tomato, grown in an
adjacent town hydroponically.
Cool...and delish, once it
ripened sufficiently!



Better late than never!
I forgot to post our final
winter farm share from
2 weeks ago, oops. I have
dutifully posted pics of
an entire year's worth of
local produce since last
June. This last haul
included 4 ears of popping
corn (one of our favourites), 8lbs. of parsnips, a bag of spinach, a bag of bok choy & kale, a piece of daikon, and a 13lb. bag mix of other storage vegetables such as rutabaga, winter turnip, russet potato, carrot, onion, shallot, garlic, parsley root...and a mammoth winter turnip from the "extras" bin! And as usual I brushed aside the snow to pick some frizen sage leaves.

Cotton Candy Land

A trip to the cousins'
house always necessitates
packing some munchies...
not because they won't
offer vegan-friendly food,
but because we don't want
to wipe out their cabinets;
they can sympathize with
their 4 younger boys still
at home. It's quite the mayhem when they all get together!

Monday:
AJ's snack:
canteloupe;
rice ball;
broccoli.





Ryan's lunch: cantaloupe chunks & cherry halves; steamed broccoli; 1/2 a Glenny's brown rice marshmallow treat topped with chocolate peanut butter; rice balls with stamped soy wrappers.
I packed up a trove of non-perishable snacks for Ryan's trip with Dada. Memphis is not exactly a vegan destination location!

Ryan's suitcase conveyed
the food, his bathing suit,
and his YMCA swim
bubble. These days you
have to pack and check
any liquids you want to
bring along, like rice milk
for instance.


Tuesday:
Ryan's lunch: Luna bar; cherries; Tofurkey sandwich topped with red bell pepper "poinsettia" with cucumber "leaves"; baby carrots; bread "flower" spread with chocolate peanut butter.

AJ's snack:
cantaloupe;
carrot; Veggie
Booty; Tofurky
"flower"
sandwiches.


Nate's lunch:
grape tomatoes;
blackberries;
cucumber slice;
Tofurky "flower"
sandwich; a cherry;
a carrot; red bell
pepper strips.

Thanks to Two Vegan
Boys
for reminding me
that I hadn't had a curry
in months! And I'd never
thought to add zucchini.
So I whipped up my
usual recipe with the
added zucchini and some
farm carrots.

Wednesday:

Reindeer
Cupcakes!
These too
cute
fellows
are the
brainchild
of River
over at
Wing-It
Vegan
. I
used a
homemade
chocolate
ganache
instead, &
the basic
chocolate
cupcake recipe from VCTOTW. The kids in AJ's class were the lucky recipients at snack time today.

Then it was time to
whip up dinners
for Ryan and Dada's
airplane trip.
Thai spring rolls;
grape tomatoes;
a festively frosted
chocolate cupcake;
smoked tempeh,
lettuce & tomato sandwiches; edamame...

Cold soba noodles;
cherries; grapes;
carrots; avocado
maki.

I packed everything
in recyclable/disposable
packaging so Dada didn't
have to worry about
losing or washing containers. Both were containers from packaged food such as Veggie Chips and donut holes from Whole Foods. They ended up being the perfect sizes for a shared father-son travel dinner.

Thursday:
AJ's snack & Nate's lunch: grapes; grape tomatoes; cold tofu; steamed broccoli; soba noodles.

So far I've heard the trip to the Magic the Gathering World Championships in Memphis, Tennessee is going well. Dada is a special guest there this year. This is the longest I've ever been apart from one of my children. They enjoyed a dinner meeting at the Graceland mansion, and a vegetable sushi platter at Bluefin.

Friday:
Maia is 5 months
old! She can stand
pretty well now
against things or
with assistance.
She got 2 teeth
last month. And
she has almost
enough Hello Kitty
outfits to wear one
every day of the
week, LOL.

She loves rolling,
playing with her
toys, going to the
YMCA, and being
bugged by her 3
big brothers.
